A Chorus of Robins

This pattern was a submission for the Spoonflower Design Challenge called Welcoming Walls. I wanted to try my hand at a Mid Century Modern, Charlie Harper-style, English Robin. What emerged was another custom tote bag, also for my magnificent sister-in-law.

The tote sports an earlier iteration of the pattern and I think I like the squares as much as the Robins. It’s been fun to see how patterns just emerge. As I thought about creating this tote, and I made a dots pattern similar to the flamingo tote dots, and then wanted something more ordered, with clean lines, to tie the two patterns together. The Robins are little more of a tidy look, and also have an organic MidMod style background. The dots are fully organic and hand drawn. The squares just fit right in on the other end of the spectrum.

I went through several iterations of the main pattern and the robin herself.

My MidMod Robin is also a celebration of our Mum, Robin, who some of you may have known as Ruby. Since her transition in 2019, I’ve had in mind to create a tattoo design in her memory. So it has come into reality. I’m so happy with how this chirpy, little Robin turned out. Lovelove Ruby.
